Let’s talk Microchips

A teeny weeny ‘chip’ that makes an enormous difference to your pet life. At Summer Hill Village Vet, we go mutts for microchips.

Have you ever worried about what might happen if your pet went missing? 😟 Isn’t it a scary thought? That’s why at Summer Hill Village Vet, we’re all about microchipping! This tiny device can make a HUGE difference in keeping your furry (or not-so-furry) friend safe.

How does it work?

A microchip is the size of a grain of rice! It is a form of permanent identification and is inserted under the skin. You might be thinking “ouch!” BUT due to the extremely small size of a microchip, and how quick it is to place, often your pet will not even notice when the ‘chip’ is being administered!

How microchips have made a PAWS-ITIVE difference to us!

“It’s not uncommon for a member of public to call us or bring in a lost pet that they have found. When this happens, we always hope that these pets are microchipped, not only to make it easier for us to find the lost pets owner, but most importantly to limit the time and stress that builds as a pet realises they’re lost and an owner realises that their pet is lost which could be life threatening for the pet. If a lost pet comes into Summer Hill Village Vet, we have a microchip scanner at the reception desk, allowing us to easily scan the pet, bring up a number than gives us access to the owner’s details, whereby, we can email, text message or even drop the pet back off at their home. The best part is the relief and excitement that is shared when a lost pet is reunited with their family with the support of such a tiny chip.” – Olivia (Receptionist at Summer Hill Village Vet”

Why should I microchip my pet?

A microchip is an amazing addition to a pet collar and tag which can fall off or rub off over time. It is important to be aware that a microchip is not a GPS tracking device nor is it battery operated.

Veterinary Clinics and Hospitals, animal shelters and local councils in Australia have access to microchip scanners, allowing lost pets who are microchipped, to be swiftly reunited with their family!

Microchip furr-endly animals!

Microchips are inserted by Veterinarians under the skin of all kinds of animals! Very commonly, cats and dogs are microchipped, AND so are turtles and lizards, birds, horses, rabbit, and guinea pigs! We even microchipped an expensive bonsai tree once! Microchipping your pets, big or small, common, or uncommon, is very much encouraged and welcome here at Summer Hill Village Vet.

In NSW, all puppies and kittens must be microchipped by the age of 12 weeks and before being sold or given away.
